Spend the day with engineering professionals and participate in a hands-on-activity and facility tour at a local engineering company. (Grades 8, 9) Slideshow Sat. Oct. 29, 2011 – Learn how to develop implantable micro chips for medical devices. Engineering, integrated circuits, microchips and more for medical devices. (Grades 11, 12) Slideshow Tues. Nov. 1, 2011 – College Help Night. Two guest speakers will offer suggestions regarding writing your college essay and interview techniques (grades10, 11 and parents) Sat. Nov. 5, 2011 – Imagination and Math. Inspired and lively math challenges await you. Variety of interactive, creative group math activities. (Grades 10, 11) Sat. Nov. 5, 2011 – Explore Polar Region Science from Penguins to Polar Bears. Explore the Ends of the Earth exhibit and discover the unique nature of the Earth's polar regions, the science undertaken there and how these regions are indicators of climate changes. (Grades 8, 9) Slideshow Sat. Nov. 19, 2011 – Robotics on the Move: Building and Programming Small Robots for Competition. Learn some fundamentals of robotics in this hands-on class where you will build and program (in C) a lego-bot. You will also learn about the BE WiSE Botball team and earn preferred eligibility to be on the team. (Grades 8. 9) Sat. Dec. 3, 2011 – Human Patient Simulations, SDSU Nursing School. The Sharp Healthcare Human Patient Simulation Center at SDSU School of Nursing houses 7 "patients". During your visit to the Center, you will be able to interact with a hospitalized patient as if you were a nursing student. Students take vital signs, give medications, assist in the birth of a baby, and save lives. (Grade 11) Slideshow Sat. Jan. 28, 2012 – Advanced Solar Engineering. UCSD researchers are opening their labs to share with us the future in solar technology. Learn how nanotechnology, meteorology, and other science disciplines are working together to study and use our sun's energy in very powerful ways. (Grade 11 ) Sat. Jan. 28, 2012 – Blood and Bone Marrow. Learn about the science behind blood and bone marrow diagnostics as used to detect cancer. (Grade 12 ) Sat. Jan. 28, 2012 – Exploring Engineering. Engineers harness the power of light to design electrical devices and manufacture complex objects. In this session you will learn how fiber optics are used in telephones, and how your remote control communicates with your TV. You will also use an engineering program to design a keychain that will be cut using a laser. (Grades 8, 9) Sat. Feb. 4, 2012 – The Introns and Exons of Genomic Research. Explore the recent advancements and technologies that are currently being used in the rapidly evolving field of genomics and medicine. (Grade 11) Sat. Feb. 4,. 2012 – Sewage to SeaWater. Every year the city of San Diego spends over $17 million to treat wastewater. What if the waste could be used to make the electricity needed to run the treatment processes? What if we could make NEW water in the process? Research is currently under way to do just that. (Grades 8, 9) Sat. Feb. 11, 2012 – Math Mania. Have a blast and explore the world of mathematics through games, quizzes and hands-on projects. (Grades 8, 9) Sat. Feb. 11, 2012 – Introduction to the Crime Lab. Come see the real CSI. Spend the afternoon in the San Diego Sheriff's Crime Laboratory learning how science is used to solve crimes. (Grade 10. Space is limited so same workshop is being held on Sat. Feb. 26 to accommodate more Alumnae) Sat. Feb. 11, 2012 – Science Writing Careers. Learn about the opportunities available for those interested in both science and writing. See examples of writing styles for the general public, scientific publications, grants and businesses and more. (Grades 11, 12) Sat. Feb. 25, 2012 – Introduction to the Crime Lab. You will be have the chance to look at real fossil collections to learn about how paleontology works. (Grades 8, 9) Slideshow Sat. March 3, 2012 – Expanding Your Horizons Conference. (Grades 8, 9, 10) April 14, 2012 – Quakes and Shakes: Designing structures to withstand earthquakes. Students will learn the basic concepts in the design of our buildings and bridges against earthquakes through hands-on activities and demonstrations. Event will include a tour of the amazing UCSD Structural Engineering research facilities. (Grades 8, 9)
