Be WiSE and the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR) are excited to announce that applications for the summer Engineering Boot Camp are now available. This 5-day event being held July 12th through 16th, 2010 introduces young women to a wide range of engineering and design careers including electrical engineering and speech recognition technology. We are also thrilled that the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International's 13th annual competition is providing us with a private group tour to meet the teams from around the world and watch them prepare for their event.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the girls to see engineering and engineers in action. Many of the areas the girls will be observing require security clearance and are not open to the public. The week includes tours of the various facilities and time with professionals working in robotics, antenna design and satellite image processing. The girls will work on projects that include creating alarm systems and mapping their own voice signatures. Many of the sessions will be held at the Bayside portion of SPAWAR, which provides the girls with a chance to watch the Marine Mammal program staff training and working with dolphins. There is an amazing collection of science and engineering professionals eager to share their passion for science with the group. We look forward to seeing you!

While at the robotics facility the group will get to operate smaller robots and observe larger (vehicle sized) robots in action. At the antenna range students will use portable antennas to find transmitters hidden on base. The girls will be studying the characteristics of various materials during an activity that is broken into several days' worth of enrichment and delicious fun. Everyday the girls will have opportunities to ask questions and receive tutoring on the wide range of material they are being exposed to, including wave mechanics, electricity and forces.  On Thursday the girls will get to present their experience to family and friends, and hear more about internships and scholarships available to them.  The Friday morning session will be held at the AUVSI contest.
