Calling All Ocean Explorers -Come on a Digital Adventure With Us! College For Kids 2010

Gifted Students entering Grades 5-9 may sign up

Join us for a tour of the Pacific Ocean with computers! Follow the gentle giants of the ocean, blue whales. Cruise across the Pacific from Los Angeles to Tokyo. Climb the largest mountain on Earth, an active volcano! Explore sea mounts, underwater canyons & more!!  We'll dive to the deepest part of the oceans and explore the mysteries of the ocean depths as we learn how to use digital mapping technologies.

Students will learn computer mapping skills, work with real data sets collected by marine biologists, study visualizations of oceanographic datasets and learn how to use mapping software platforms Google Earth, Bing Maps and GeoMapApp.  We will learn how to use GPS hand held units to GEOCACHE and search for hidden treasures around Southwestern College using satellite technology. There will be cool prizes and technology take homes for all students. There will be activities and show and tell maps the students will bring home, along with a guide for parents on  'How to Keep Your Child Safe on the Internet'.

Michelle Kinzel holds a Master's Degree in Geographic Information Systems, and has over a decade of experience as a field researcher and marine biologist. She has created hundreds of technology trainings for scientists, educators and children.   Michelle serves as an instructor in the San Diego Mesa College GIS Program, and has been dubbed the 'fun meister' by her colleagues, as she always creates educational experiences that seem more like fun than work!  She brings enthusiasm and solid teaching to all her events and will entertain your child as she infuses them with high technology skills and encourages them to problem solve as they learn new skills and concepts.
