Interested in U.S. involvement in Antarctic research?
"Would you be interested in having an Antarctic outreach program at your school? The U.S. Antarctic Marine Living Resource (AMLR) research program will conduct its 25th field season in Antarctica in winter 2010-11. For 25 years, this program has conducted research in the coldest, windiest, driest, but still pristine continent, Antarctica and the creatures that live there.
The AMLR program, housed in the NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, CA, is a local resource we'd like to bring to San Diego schools in the form of an outreach presentation which would feature images of a fur seal birthing a pup; Gentoo penguins protecting their chicks; scientists at their research camps and in research vessels. We will also explain NOAA science in the Antarctic and how it relates to the American public. These efforts are especially pertinent as we gain a better understanding of how climate change affects the last pristine places.
If you are interested in having such a program at your school in the next year, please contact
Jessica.Lipsky@noaa.gov by Friday 12/11. We are anticipating funding for the outreach program through NOAA Preserve America Initiative Internal Funding Program, so there would be no cost to your school, other than an interest.
