The San Diego Public Library will launch an occasional series entitled SCIENCE TALK, focusing on issues of science and their interconnectedness with everyday life, on Wednesday, December 16 at 6:30 pm in the Wangenheim Room of the Central Library, located at 820 E Street. The series is designed as a fun opportunity to engage in public conversations about science and technology reflecting their time-honored relevance to human development and cultures. The inaugural talk, Charles Darwin and On the Origin of Species, participates in the worldwide commemorations of the bicentenary of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species. This free event is open to the public.
On the Origin of Species is considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology, the first major synthesis in the life sciences of the ideas which "over the last 150 years have revolutionized our understanding of nature and our place within it". Dr. Estralita Martin, Assistant Dean, College of Sciences, San Diego State University will discuss the book's historic publication, its place in scientific and intellectual history, and its continuing relevance.
