Recipe for Sustainable Science is a teacher training workshop that provides middle level educators with the process, skills and confidence to study Green Chemistry with their students. Through a simulation, students will apply the concepts of Green Chemistry to a business model that develops an understanding of the economic, social and environmental implications of chemical processes.
Curriculum
Teachers enjoy a day-long workshop where they will be immersed in the sustainable pedagogy of Beyond Benign. Participants will receive training in the 12 principles of Green Chemistry, and the curriculum unit which will introduce the students to these concepts and the theory and practice of how to incorporate green chemistry into their teaching practice.
Standards-Based
The simulation addresses and demonstrates national standards from multiple disciplines. Educators will walk away with unique activities which fit into required learning for standardized state testing as well as encouraging students to think critically about the practice of science.
Methodologies
The institute uses effective and innovative ideas with hands-on activities, role playing, and technology applications in a truly interdisciplinary experience where students can clearly see the application of science in society.
Teachers teaching teachers
The educational expertise of Beyond Benign is enhanced by highly talented educators who have helped to develop this unit and are constantly updating and enhancing the materials based upon their own classroom implementation. During the workshop these teachers present the lessons and provide insight into how to work Green Chemistry into teaching practice.
