DNA Day with the Salk Institute

Join the Fleet and scientists from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and experience the excitement of scientific discovery.  Get a close up view of some real mutant fruit flies and learn the strange-but-true things that happen in the realm of genetics and learn more about why we study model organisms to better understanding our own genetic machinery!

Saturday Science Club for Girls “T-Shirt Chromatography”

November 14, 2009

12:00 – 2:00 p.m.

Girls in grades 5 – 8 can join the Fleet on the second Saturday of each month to investigate exciting science topics. In this class, discover “T-shirt Chromatography,” tie-dye  is so passé!  Create your own colorful T-shirt design while learning about chemistry and chromatography.  Bring your own white shirt to decorate or use one of arts – this promises to be a psychedelic day!

Exploring Ethics Lecture: “Fact vs. Spin in Science News”

In conjunction with the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology, the Fleet welcomes guests to encounter science from an ethical perspective.  Panelists Kim McDonald of UCSD Science Communications and David Washburn of Voice of San Diego lead the panel.

The Sky Tonight Planetarium Show “The Constellations of Winter” 

December 2, 2009

7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Reuben H. Fleet Science Center

See the San Diego sky as it appears on the night of the planetarium show and listen to an astronomer guide you through the night’s sky. Weather and operational requirements permitting, the San Diego Astronomy Association provides free telescope viewing outdoors on the Prado in Balboa Park. This is a separate free event held on the first Wednesday of every month. Planetarium show tickets are not required.

 

Cost to Attend: $9.00 - $10.50

Saturday Science Club for Girls “Cheap Talk”

Girls in grades 5 – 8 can join the Fleet on the second Saturday of each month to investigate exciting science topics. Find out what really happens when you make a cell phone call in “Cheap Talk”.  Then, work as a team to engineer the tallest cell tower at the lowest possible cost.
