STEP UP Biotech Program - Creating a workforce pipeline from education to industry.

San Diego City College has created the STEP UP biotech program.  It is a certificate program designed for students who want to pursue a biotech career out of high school and earn a certificate in the field.

City College has a grant that will pay teachers to help identify and support students who enter the program (most likely high school seniors). Teachers who are part of this grant can also earn money developing curricula plus teachers are eligible to obtain supplies and borrow science equipment from the STEP UP program.

STEP UP is a one year program.  It is comprised of a series of two courses, Bio 109 (offered in the fall) and Bio 206 (offered in spring).  Students will receive a Certificate of Performance upon completion. Students who complete the first course in the certificate program (Bio109) can apply for a paid internship through the STEP UP Program.  There are no pre-requisites for Bio 109; students who successfully complete Bio 109 can enroll in Bio 206.

Classes are small - 10-15 students – and there is a strong emphasis on hands-on learning
