Science Education Speakers Bureau (SESB): Bring a guest speaker to your middle school classroom for a hands-on lesson related to science standards
Would you like to provide your students with a hands-on learning experience that will increase their content knowledge and entertain them at the same time? Are you interested in earning $50 for classroom supplies?
Please read on for additional information, and email koverklift@biocom.org if you would like to schedule a classroom visit. Two scientists would like to give their time during the week of Decmber 13-17th, and your students could be the lucky recipients! Speakers are also available throughout 2011.
The Science Education Speakers Bureau (SESB) is an innovative program that brings industry professionals from business, research and higher education into middle school classrooms to talk about their career paths and teach hands-on lessons related to science standards. Middle school teachers can chose one of fifteen lessons from the program's learning matrix for industry professional volunteers to utilize in middle school classrooms. Each lesson is aligned with the conceptual development of the science standards and showcases an applicable research or industry example. The lessons are web archived and lab supplies or manipulative kits will be prepped and delivered to the classroom.
Lesson topics include: The Nucleus, Cell Membranes, Mitosis and Meiosis, Genetic Diseases, Genetic Dominance, Genetic Phenotype, Cladograms, Natural Selection, Mitochondrial DNA, Heart Valves, Blood Flows in One Direction, Fossil Evidence, Plant Respiration, Light -EM Spectra Waves, Levers in the Body
The Science Education Speakers Bureau is a mechanism where industry professionals can relate real-world opportunities in science to young students before they have made their mind up about a career path. The ultimate goal of this project is to increase student interest and appreciation for science and develop a homegrown workforce that meets industry's needs.
