Workshop Description

SpaceTECH -  Engaging, Standards-based Astronomy and Space Science Activities for the Classroom

Kids of all ages are fascinated by astronomy and space travel, but teaching these topics can be daunting even for teachers with a science background.   In this workshop Dr. Blanco will provide a brief overview of astronomy and space science. Using simple demonstrations, participants will specifically address many common student misconceptions about distances, gravity, and the Earth as a planet. Attendees will participate in hands-on, minds-on activities designed to engage students while teaching them skills required for science, math and literacy standards.  Participants will receive a CD-ROM with Powerpoint slides, applets, video clips and PDF student worksheets.

All participants will receive free admission to the San Diego Air and Space Museum, including the new Science of Aliens exhibition. Each participant will also receive a copy of the accompanying educators' guide produced just for teachers by the museum.  The subjects discussed in the educators' guide tie in very well with California State Standards for many grades, and with the hands-on elements of the workshop and exhibition.

Please join us for an exciting and informative session of hands-on learning presented by Dr. Philip Blanco, Director, Project ASTRO, Professor, Grossmont College.

Registration is free. Space is limited. Please contact Ange Mason at 858-534-5064 or amason@ucsd.edu to reserve your space.

Please feel free to forward this announcement on to others who may be interested.
