UCSD High School Volunteer Summer 2010 Internship Opportunities at the San Diego Supercomputer Center
The San Diego Supercomputer Center, at the University of California, San Diego, launches a new volunteer internship program for high school students entitled Research Experience for High School Students (REHS). As part of this program, students will be paired with an SDSC mentor and will work as part of a research team dedicated to a particular area of computational research.
Please review the research opportunities listed below and submit a separate application for each opportunity that may interest you. All applications must be submitted via US Mail and postmarked no later than May 15, 2010.
San Diego Supercomputer Center, UC San Diego
July 6 – August 13, 2010 (six weeks).
Internship hours will be coordinated with your mentor and can range from 15 to 30 hours per week.
UCSD High School Volunteer Summer 2010 Internship Opportunities
Project Title: Refinement of Data Mining Software and Application to Space Plasmas for Data Analysis and Visualization
The overall summer student research project will include implementation of a novel data mining algorithm within an existing machine learning environment, testing of the tool, and the application of the simple data analysis and visualization techniques to the space plasmas data. The student will gain a valuable research experience in learning about data mining, data preparation, visualization and modeling in the space sciences data, as well as preparation, visualization and modeling of general scientific data. Furthermore, the student will have the ability to gain extensive experience and perfect his/hers JAVA implementation skills ranging from the planning stage to the coding and testing stages. Students will be exposed to many of the basic techniques and common approaches to digital art and design, including the familiar skills of drawing, painting and composition as synthesized through the digital medium, but also silhouette and contour design, using abstraction in development, and using photographic reference and the basics of image sampling.
Internship Hours Per Week: 25 hours
Project Title: Sonification of UCSD Campus Energy Consumption
The overall summer student research project will include implementation of a novel real-time interactive environmental process monitoring strategy within an existing data sonification framework. The project will involve connecting to the campus energy database, implementation of specific sonification elements in JAVA and an audio synthesis environment and programming language such as SuperCollider, and the application of data analysis. We expect the qualitative data display provided by appropriately designed sonification strategies to assist in the discovery of patterns of campus energy consumption; the platform will interface with data-preprocessing and data mining strategies implemented in MATLAB. The developed infrastructures may form a code basis for similar projects in the future. The student will gain a valuable practical experience in learning about sound as means for monitoring time-oriented datasets, the structure of energy consumption at UCSD campus, as well as preparation, modeling and interactive sonification of general scientific data. Furthermore, the student will have the ability to gain extensive experience in his/hers JAVA implementation skills ranging from planning to coding and testing, to learn about sound rendering environments such as SuperCollider and PureData, and potentially to implement OpenSoundControl network protocol.
Internship Hours Per Week: 20 hours
Project Title: Visualization and 3D Content Creation
SDSC Visualization Services invites high school students interested in media and visualization creation. The students will be assigned projects in 3D modeling and animation using the Maya software. Knowledge of 3D tools like Maya, 3D Studio Max and AutoCAD is useful but not required. Students with programming background will be assigned projects for 3D creation using Maya scripting.
Internship Hours Per Week: To Be Arranged
Project Title: The Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis Web Development Intern
The Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) has an opportunity for a student to contribute to the design and development of our web site at http://www.caida.org/. The position requires experience with publishing and web page development, as well as the ability to conduct research and to draft text.
Internship Hours Per Week: 10 - 15 hours
Project Title: Documentation Assistant - Medicaid Fraud Detection Project
This internship will assist SDSC staff developing documents to support SDSC’s Medicaid fraud detection project. The work, to start, will focus on formatting documents using the template we are developing and checking acronym tables at the end of documents to make sure all acronyms in a given document are reflected in that document’s table.
Internship Hours Per Week: 15 hours
