Junior Solar Sprint
Junior Solar Sprint (JSS) is a hands-on educational program initiated by the U.S. Department of Energy to stimulate students’ interest in science and encourage them towards a technical career. Under the program, sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students form teams to design, build and race solar-powered model cars. All participants use a standardized solar panel and motor. Except for a few specification regulations, unlimited ingenuity and inventiveness can be used in car construction. The cars are raced on a track with guide wires. Awards are given for design as well as for the track event. JSS solar car kits donated by sponsors will be made available by the San Diego Renewable Energy Society during the Teacher Training Sessions. The kits can also be purchased through Solar World at and Pitsco Inc. Inquiries may be directed to juniorsolarsprint@gmail.com; additional information is also available at the JSS website http://sdres.org/jss.
Teacher Training Sessions: At least two teacher training seminars will be held between January and April 2011 to review competition requirements and provide teachers with resources and training for building the cars and teaching the JSS curriculum. The dates for the sessions will be announced through the JSS web site http://sdres.org/jss. The likely venue would be at the California Center for Sustainable Energy.
2011 Junior Solar Sprint Race Day: Race day has been scheduled for Saturday, June 4, 2011 with likely venue at the San Diego Electrical Training Center, site of the 2010 JSS Race Day.
