TeacherTECH : Back to School Biotech Series- Proteins in Action: ELISA
Middle School and High School Teachers are invited to attend an exciting fall TeacherTECH workshop series focused on biotech. Ready to start the new school year? Looking for some fun “out of the box” lab activities to do with your students? Captivate their imagination. Spark the investigator spirit. Makes the invisible visible and introduce your students to the exciting world of DNA or expand on activities you are already doing in your classes.
Tuesday, November 2, 2010
5:00pm - 7:00pm
San Diego Supercomputer Center, Auditorium
University of California, San Diego
Workshop Description
The highly specific nature of antibodies has been harnessed to develop tests for almost any biological molecule that elicits an immune response. See how ELISA assays provide rapid detection of disease-causing agents such as those found in HIV, anthrax, mad cow disease, or the bioengineered proteins found in GMO foods.
Workshop Activities
The ELISA Immuno Explorer kit integrates multiple core content areas and facilitates teaching about immune system functions and the unique properties of antibodies that have revolutionized medicine, epidemiology, and life science research.
The kit utilizes a technique referred to as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect the presence of an antibody or an antigen in a sample. The protocol uses two antibodies, one of which is specific to the antigen and another that is coupled to an enzyme. This second antibody gives the assay its enzyme-linked name, and causes a chromogenic substrate to produce color wherever it is bound. ELISA is a powerful antibody-based biodetection tool used in the field to hunt for pathogens in water, food, or air. The instructor will also show you materials modifications to fit your class and budget.
Come to one or more of our upcoming biotech workshops for this fall:
