Aviation-based Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (A-STEM) event at Gillespie Field Airport - 9/25/10
On Saturday, Sept 25, Air Group One (AG-1) will offer an Aviation-based Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (A-STEM) event at Gillespie Field Airport, 1950 N. Marshall Ave Hangar #6, El Cajon El Cajon, CA. There is no cost for participation. Lunch and transportation must be provided by the participants. The event begins at 9 AM sharp and ends at about 3 PM.
The AG-1 A-STEM event brings together up to 45 middle and high-school participants and about 20 experienced pilots as discussion leaders. Chaperones are always welcome. Two airplanes, a helicopter, and an El Cajon Fire Unit will provide the hands-on environment to accelerate and motivate participants towards STEM study.
Groups of about 5 participants will rotate among 9 learning stations for 20-minute sessions. Station topics include Power Plant, Instrument Panel, Aviation Careers, etc. About ten students will receive a 30-minute flight in a light airplane with a Certified Flight Instructor. Flights will be awarded to participants based on quality questions asked during the event.
Participant learning will be measured by analysis of pre- and post-tests based on the station objectives and the California Math and Science Standards
A follow-up event to the Miramar Airshow occurs on Saturday, 10/2, where participants will engage in activities based on what was learned at the 9/25 event.
