TeacherTECH Math Series- Pre-Algebra Through Pre-Calculus Tools for the Classroom Using the TI 83/TI 84 Calculator

Middle School, High School, Community College and Continuing Education Science Educators are invited to attend a special TeacherTECH Math Series workshop focused on the use of graphing calculators in the classroom to teach pre-algebra through pre-calculus - a great tool for visual learners!  Learn the techniques to help you and your students get the most from these wonderful mini-computers!

Wednesday, October 6, 2010
4:30pm- 6:30pm
SDSC Training Room 279
San Diego Supercomputer Center
University of California, San Diego

Course Overview

This workshop is designed for pre-algebra through pre-calculus educators.  Learn how to teach powerful and intuitive techniques using the TI 83/TI 84 family of graphing calculators.  Take the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words" to new heights in your classroom!

Connect symbols to mathematical language.  Build your students' passion for math!.  Each attendee will be provided a workshop manual, authored by the instructor, which will be a great classroom resource.  This manual provides a collage of virtually all type of problems a teacher would be expected to teach.

Participants will then discuss how to incorporate these techniques into their own lesson planning.

Participants will be asked to bring their own TI 83 or TI 84 calculator. They are interchangeable.  We will have a few additional calculators available for loan during the workshop.

All skill levels welcome.

There will be a more advanced workshop offered subsequent to this workshop.

Topics include:

  • Pos and neg fractional, integer, and 0 exponents
  • Scientific notation
  • Solving systems of equations by graphing and by matrix
  • Finding f(X) value four different ways
  • Sketching the graph of inverse of f(X)
  • Finding equations of lines and parabolas, given ordered pairs
  • Finding X and Y intercepts
  • Factoring quadratics by graphing
  • Finding parabola vertices
  • Graphing first and second degree systems of inequalities
  •  Testing ordered pairs on inequality graphs

Please join us for an exciting and informative session of hands-on learning presented by Bob Curry, retired math instructor and university presenter.

Registration is free. Space is limited. Please contact Ange Mason at 858-534-5064 or amason@ucsd.edu to reserve your space.
