Chem Expo 2011
Saturday, October 22, 2011
11 AM to 3 PM at Balboa Park
Dear Chemistry / Science Teacher:
The San Diego Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) would like to invite you and your students to Chem Expo 2010, on Saturday, October 22 from 11 AM to 3 PM, in Balboa Park’s Casa del Prado (just east of the reflecting pool).
The Chem Expo is a free event that takes place annually in recognition of ACS National Chemistry Week.
Chem Expo is designed to spark student interest in chemistry and science by means of chemical demonstrations, displays from local companies and organizations, and hands-on activities. This is the twenty-fourth year of Chem Expo in San Diego and we want you to join us in this celebration.
This year’s theme: The International Year of Chemistry 2011 (IYC 2011). It is a worldwide celebration of the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind. Under the unifying theme “Chemistry—our life, our future,” we will be celebrating the year with a range of interactive, entertaining, and educational activities for all ages. IYC 2011 events will emphasize that chemistry is a creative science essential for sustainability and improvements to our way of life. Activities, such as lectures, exhibits, and hands-on experiments, will explore how chemical research is critical for solving our most vexing global problems involving food, water, health, energy, transportation, and more.
Each student who
attends Chem Expo will be given an
extra credit “bingo card”. Bingo stamps
on the card can be obtained by talking to a chemist from a local company,
participating in hands-on activities, watching the live chemical demonstrations
and answering questions about the chemistry involved. Your students can then return the bingo cards
to you to verify their attendance and receive extra credit, at your
discretion.
Please tell your students to arrive at Chem Expo no later than 2:00 PM if they plan to complete all of the extra credit activities. Extra credit handouts will not be distributed after 2:30 PM.
There will be a free raffle at Chem Expo. Eight students will win $50 each (randomly drawn on each half hour - see the attached flyer), and the School with the greatest number of students in attendance will win a $200 gift certificate.
Please encourage attendance and extra credit participation by all of your students. Your school might win the attendance prize!
