Educators teaching grades 3 - 9 are invited to attend a special TeacherTECH Earth Science Series offered in collaboration with General Atomics.
This exciting series, taught be experts in the field of astronomy and earth science, is focused on hands-on earth science activities and resources to engage your students while teaching the standards.
Wednesday, February 23, 2011
4:30pm- 6:30pm
General Atomics, National Fusion Facility
Workshop Description: The Lighter Side of Earth Science: How We Know What We Know
Earth science aficionados understand that learning about our planet encompasses learning something about our entire neighborhood, the universe, as well. The TeacherTECH Earth Science workshop provided by the General Atomics Energy/Fusion Education Team will help you to understand our place in the universe using interactive demonstrations that reveal some of the science underlying the electromagnetic spectrum and why it is central to our understanding of 'outer space,' radiation and radioactivity and its role in producing certain elements on Earth, and plasma, a state of matter that exists in stars and within the atmosphere of Earth. An increased understanding of these specific content areas will broaden and deepen topics in traditional earth science learning that are often left out or understated. In addition, participants will tour the DIII-D Fusion Facility, where scientists and engineers fuse 150,000,000 K deuterium ions in a quest to ultimately produce electricity for eons to come.
All participants will receive a workshop certificate endorsed by the San Diego County Office of Education for professional development credit.
Please join us for an exciting and informative session of hands-on learning presented by Dr. Richard Lee, Chief Operator, Fusion Education Manager, DIII-D National Fusion Facility. General Atomics.
Registration is free. Space is limited. Please contact Ange Mason at 858-534-5064 or amason@ucsd.edu to reserve your space.
