Educators teaching grades 4 - 9 are invited to attend a special TeacherTECH Science workshop focused on California geology.

This exciting workshop combines basic geoscience knowledge with web-based visualization software and hands-on learning activities to engage students while teaching the standards.   Lunch provided.

Saturday, February 19, 2011

10:00am- 3:00pm

San Diego Supercomputer Center, Training Room  (UCSD)

and

Torrey Pines State Beach

Workshop Description:

Kids of all ages are fascinated by rocks and minerals as well as geologic processes such as earthquakes and volcanism, but teaching these topics can be challenging for educators without specialized training in geology.

After receiving a brief overview of California’s dynamic geologic and plate tectonic settings, participants will be introduced to a variety of simple demonstrations, hands-on learning activities, and public domain visualization software designed to arm them with the skills and tools they need to address California’s Earth Science standards.

Following a morning session and lunch (provided) at UCSD, the workshop will reconvene at nearby Torrey Pines State Beach for a guided geology walk.  During the walk, participants will see examples of rocks and minerals from the morning session.  Participants are encouraged to bring cameras for photographing geologic features observed during the beach walk.  Please wear comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing, and a hat for the beach walk.

Standards addressed will be selected from: California Geology.

Participants will receive a CD-ROM with diagrams, video clips, lecture summaries, supporting materials, and animation links.

All participants will receive a workshop certificate endorsed by the San Diego County Office of Education for professional development credit.

Please join us for an exciting and informative session that combines basic knowledge, hands-on learning, a guided field trip, and a host of classroom-ready teaching resources.  This workshop is presented by Don Barrie, Professor of Geology at San Diego Mesa College and a registered professional geologist in California.

Registration is free. Space is
limited. Please contact Ange Mason at 858-534-5064 or
 amason@ucsd.edu to reserve your space.

Please feel free to forward this announcement on to others who may be interested.
