On behalf of San Diego State University, we would like to invite your senior science class to attend the Kyoto Prize Symposium on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The Kyoto Prize, often compared to the Nobel Prize, is awarded annually by the Inamori Foundation. The foundation was established in 1984 by Dr. Kazuo Inamori, founder and chairman of Kyocera and KDDI Corporation. The prize is given to outstanding scholars in the areas of advanced technology, basic sciences and art, and philosophy. For 2010, the Kyoto Prize in advanced technology focuses on the field of biotechnology and medical technology. SDSU will welcome the advanced technology winner, Dr. Shinya Yamanaka.
Background on Dr. Shinya Yamanaka:
Dr. Yamanaka serves as senior investigator at the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease in San Francisco and professor at Kyoto University, where he operates as director of CiRA, Kyoto University’s Center for iPS Cell Research and Application. Dr. Yamanaka’s work has had an unprecedented influence on both the ethical concerns surrounding stem cell research by utilizing induced pluripotent stem cells derived from adult skin cells rather than human embryos, as well as the overall effectiveness of these cells in medical practice.
