Reuben H Fleet Science Center Programs for February and March 2011

Superball Science

February  5, 12, 19, 26           1:00 - 3:00 PM

Bounce into our Discovery Lab to explore Superball Science!  Learn the science behind the different size, shape, and weight of balls used in your favorite sports and games.  The highlight of your day will be making a super bouncy ball to take home.  Special activities are only $2 with admission and perfect for kids ages 5-12.  Come in before this event flies by; available Saturdays in February only.

 

Climate Conversations

February 22            5:30 PM - 7:00 PM

Join Dr. Eric Fetzer for a discussion about the anthropogenic effects of climate change. Then participate in our Climate Conversation to discuss the implications of humans changing the Earth’s climate in surprising ways. 

 

Slime Science

March 5, 12, 19, 26              1:00-3:00 PM

Slide into our Discovery Lab for Slime Science!  Be prepared to get dirty with gak, goop, and oozing observations!  Special activities are only $2 with admission and perfect for kids ages 5-12.  Don’t let this deal slip through your hands; available Saturdays in March only.

Tickets can be purchased at the ticket counter or at the door to the event.

 

Senior Monday

March 7         12:30-2:00 PM

Pushing the Envelope: Eggheads Are Yucking Up the Language
Our preoccupations as a people are found in our daily speech, and the words that started in science and technology feature prominently. From the Gold Rush to psychotherapy to gene sequencing, standard English is colored by strange science slang. We'll look at some strange and ordinary words, and their histories, and talk about why these additions to our lexis are a good sign we're innovating at more than neologisms.

Programming for seniors ages 65 and better.

 

Climate Conversations

March 29            5:30 PM - 7:00 PM

Join Dr. David Pierce for a discussion of the effects of climate change on San Diego’s water supply. Then participate in our Climate Conversation to discuss the impact on the availability of water in these source regions.

This interactive lecture series is designed for high school students to adults.  This program is free but pre-registration is required. Please RSVP to (619)238-1233, ext 847.

 

Tornado Thursday

March 24         5:00 PM & 7:00 PM

Join us for a screening of the new IMAX® film TORNADO ALLEY with a special presentation by the films’ storm-chasing meteorologist, Dr. Karen Kosiba. Dr. Kosiba participated in the largest tornado field project in history and serves as Senior Research Meteorologist at the Center for Severe Weather Research in Boulder, Colorado.

Tornado Friday

March 25         5:00 PM & 7:00 PM

Join us for a special presentation by Dr. Richard Alley, one of the world’s leading climate researchers and host of the upcoming PBS mini-series “Earth – The Operators’ Manual.” See clips from the upcoming mini-series and enjoy a special screening of TORNADO ALLEY. Dr. Alley will sign copies of his newly released companion book after each show.
