TeacherTECH Earth Science Series

Educators teaching grades 3 - 9 are invited to attend a special TeacherTECH Earth Science Series offered in collaboration with the San Diego Air and Space Museum. This exciting series, taught by experts in the field of astronomy and earth science,  is focused on hands-on earth science activities and resources to engage your students while teaching the standards.

Upcoming workshops will take place at various locations, including the San Diego Air and Space Museum, the San Diego Natural History Museum, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and Torrey Pines State Park.  Workshops will be offered in collaboration with these organizations and the San Diego Space Society, Bio-wave LLC, General Atomics, Grossmont College and Mesa College.

This workshop is the first in a series of standards-based earth science focused workshops.

Teachers who attend six of the workshops in the series will receive a $300 stipend provided by the California Space Grant Consortium, UCSD. This offer is available for the first 12 teachers who respond to this email and attend the first workshop in the series. Subsequent teachers who sign up will be placed on a waiting list for the stipend should one of the previous teachers not fulfill the six-workshop requirement.

All participants are welcome regardless of their desire for a stipend.

All of the workshops in this series will take place in February and March 2011

The complete workshop schedule will be provided during this first workshop or you may email amason@ucsd.edu to receive a copy via email.

5:00pm - 7:00pm

San Diego Supercomputer Center, Auditorium

University of California, San Diego

Workshop Description:

The wealth of new information about our solar system coming from recent space missions is fascinating to students of all ages, but can be overwhelming. In this workshop we shall  look at the "big picture" of how the different components are related in time and space. Using a combination of animations, images and video from space missions, and hands-on activities, Dr. Blanco will guide us across the solar system, connecting the California standards with the most up-to-date knowledge of our solar neighborhood.

Standards addressed will be selected from: Earth's Place in the Universe:

  • Astronomy and planetary exploration reveal the solar system's structure, scale, and change over time. As a basis for understanding this concept:
  1. Students know how the differences and similarities among the sun, the terrestrial planets, and the gas planets may have been established during the formation of the solar system.
  2. Students know the evidence from Earth and moon rocks indicates that the solar system was formed from a nebular cloud of dust and gas approximately 4.6 billion years ago.
  3. Students know the evidence from geological studies of Earth and other planets suggest that the early Earth was very different from Earth today.
  4. Students know the evidence indicating that the planets are much closer to Earth than the stars are.
  5. Students know the Sun is a typical star and is powered by nuclear reactions, primarily the fusion of hydrogen to form helium.
  6. Students know the evidence for the dramatic effects that asteroid impacts have had in shaping the surface of planets and their moons and in mass extinctions of life on Earth.
  7. Students know the evidence for the existence of planets orbiting other stars.

Participants will receive a CD-ROM with Powerpoint slides, applets, video clips. and PDF student worksheets.

All participants will receive a workshop certificate endorsed by the San Diego County Office of Education for professional development credit.

Please join us for an exciting and informative session of hands-on learning presented by Dr. Philip Blanco, Director, Project ASTRO, Professor, Grossmont College.

Registration is free. Space is limited. Please contact Ange Mason at 858-534-5064 or  amason@ucsd.edu to reserve your space.

Please feel free to forward this announcement on to others who may be interested.
