The Scripps Research Institute - 2011 Teacher Professional Development Programs
Education and outreach are integral components of the mission of The Scripps Research Institute. In just three decades, TSRI researchers have prepared hundreds of interns and trainees for successful scientific careers. Toward this end, TSRI provides a variety of programs for students and science teachers to participate in research activities designed and supervised by many of the Institute's scientists and administrators.
Our Science Partnership Scholars Program addresses secondary school teachers' interest in providing innovative, hands on science activities in the classroom that can be tied to current curricula and contemporary issues in biosciences. TSRI doctoral candidates present a lecture on state-of-the-art research topics and techniques. Past program topics include combinatorial chemistry, drug design & diseases, cells & microscopy, virology and forensics. Teachers who successfully complete the program will receive reimbursement for substitute teachers and two credits through UCSD extension.
Participants in our Summer Internship Program for Teachers in La Jolla are paid to conduct basic biomedical research in a laboratory under the supervision of a Scripps Research scientist. The program emphasizes the scientific process, research planning, bench experience, experimental design, data analysis and interaction with laboratory personnel. Participants also attend specially designed programs and field trips. In addition to the intensive eight-week summer program teachers are expected to use the laboratory experience as a springboard to create opportunities in discovery based learning for their students, effect change in their classrooms and serve as a resource for other educators.
