Summer Courses:

Create Wearable Electronics: Yes You Can!

(Space is limited, register now!)

Dates and Times:

07/11/11 - 07/15/11    M, Tu, W, Th, F, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (5 mtgs.)

Learn about electronics and microcontrollers the fun way while making your t-shirt talk, your hat tell you the temperature, or your shoes light up with every step!  In addition to being a solid introduction to electronics, circuitry, and programming, this class is fun and hands-on: students will create their own projects that they can attach to almost anything and then take home, using the Arduino microcontroller.

Introduction to Creative Computing

(Space is limited, register now!)

Dates and Times:

08/01/11 - 08/05/11   M, Tu, W, Th, F, 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (5 mtgs.)

Learn about the basics of coding by exploring the Processing Development Environment. This project-based class will focus on the development of fundamental programming skills, creation of applets that feature interactivity, allowing students to create responsive virtual environments.

Additionally, ways in which we commonly interact with the virtual environment will be explored through the dissection of a Wiimote™ and identification of its electronic features. Students will produce at least one final applet that they will be able to manipulate via the infrared controller that they have created.

This class is beginner-friendly and hands-on.  Students will complete the course with a strong fundamental understanding of Processing, a Java language derivative, which will not only help them understand other languages such as Java and C++, but it will assist them in learning to program Arduino microcontrollers as well.

Introduction to Creative Computing 102: Creating Your Own Interactive Installation

(Space is limited, register now!)

Dates and Times:

08/08/11 - 08/12/11   M, Tu, W, Th, F, 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (5 mtgs.)

Creative Computing 102 is a continuation of Creative Computing 101. Students do not have to complete Creative Computing 101 first, but should have comparable experience with using the Java or Processing language and Arduino.  Students will create an installation that is able to respond to complex sets of input conditions, perform algorithmic and procedural processing and generate real time output.  In other words, students will create a dynamic visual interface that responds to their actions.  With a hands-on approach, students will learn how to combine hardware and software in a collaborative project. They will create their own interactive application and learn intermediate programming and electronics skills at the same time.

3D Modeling and Animation Using 3D Max

Dates and Times:

08/15/11 - 08/19/11   M, Tu, W, Th, F, 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (5 mtgs.)

In this course, students will learn 3 dimensional principles and apply them in the creation of 3D representations using Autodesk's 3ds Max. This course will give students the opportunity to create 3D objects and 3D scenes, arrange 3D objects in environments, and gain understanding of how these skills translate into animations for games or visualizations.

Making Vectors into Art: An Introduction to Adobe Illustrator

Dates and Times:

08/15/11 - 08/19/11    M, Tu, W, Th, F, 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (5 mtgs.)

This course provides students with a general understanding of Adobe Illustrator and digital vector art. Techniques taught in this workshop are geared towards the fields of illustration, character design, animation, and graphic design.

Digital Drawing: Techniques for Photoshop and Beyond

Dates and Times:

07/25/11 - 07/29/11    M, Tu, W, Th, F, 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (5 mtgs.)

Learn how to draw bold and expressive graphics on paper as well as in a virtual environment! Students will explore traditional hand-drawing techniques and modern styles, as well as 2 and 3-dimensional drawing methods.

Creating a Narrative for New Media: Create Your Own Podcast or Webisode!

Dates and Times:

08/06/11 - 08/20/11    Saturdays 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (3 mtgs.)

Make your own podcast or video episodes for mobile devices!  This course will review the history of narrative communication from a holistic perspective, summarizing the myriad “forms” of communication that people have used to tell their stories over time and how those story structures have evolved to suit the media, from cave paintings and silent movies, to podcasting and blogging.  Students will develop and produce a story that is specifically designed for a mobile audience.

Designing Interactive Animations for the Web with Flash and Flex

Dates and Times:

07/11/11 - 07/15/11    M, Tu, W, Th, F, 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (5 mtgs.)

Have you ever wondered what is a Graphical User Interface (GUI)? This workshop will introduce students to GUIs and present industry design standards while teaching students how to use ActionScript to program their own animations! At the end of this course, students will be able to create and animate their own GUIs and will understand action scripting in a way that will allow them to create a diverse range of animations and web applications, preparing them for future pathways in game design and interactive media.
